Fire tongs: How to make fire tongs punch
Many people associate the term “Feuerzangenbowle” first and foremost with the film “Die Feuerzangenbowle” from 1944. In it, four gentlemen share stories from their school days while enjoying the drink that gives the film its name. But even apart from the movie, Feuerzangenbowle is popular in many households. So what exactly is it, what is a “Feuerzange,” and how do you prepare the perfect version of this drink?
What is a Feuerzangenbowle, and when is it typically enjoyed?

A Feuerzangenbowle usually consists of red wine that is enhanced with various ingredients, which can vary depending on the recipe and personal preferences. The mixture is then heated in a pot.
Next, an essential tool comes into play: the “Feuerzange,” which gives the drink its name. However, it’s not a pair of tongs like those found in a toolbox. Instead, the Feuerzange is a metal holder with cutouts.
The Feuerzange is placed on top of the pot over the drink. A sugar loaf is then placed on the Feuerzange and sprinkled with rum. The sugar loaf is set on fire, causing the sugar to melt and drip in caramelized form into the drink. This process creates the characteristic flavor that defines a Feuerzangenbowle.
This hot drink is especially popular during the winter season. Many people enjoy it before or during Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Feuerzangenbowle is also served at many Christmas markets. However, one important aspect is often lost there — the preparation itself.
It’s simply fun to watch the flame as it burns the sugar loaf, and it’s just as satisfying to see the caramelized sugar dripping into the punch.
The social aspect is also particularly meaningful. In the evening, people sit together in a cozy atmosphere with friends or adult family members, enjoying the punch. They engage in lively conversations or reminisce about shared memories.
Just because Feuerzangenbowle is so popular in winter doesn’t mean it can only be enjoyed then — it also tastes wonderful on a summer evening out on the terrace.
What does the perfect Feuerzangenbowle recipe look like?

An important ingredient for the drink is the wine. Typically, a dry red wine is used. For ten cups of punch, you’ll need three bottles of 750 milliliters each. Pour the wine into a suitable pot. Then add various ingredients to refine the drink with their aroma. For ten cups, we recommend:
- three cloves
- two cinnamon sticks
- half a vanilla pod
- one star anise
You’ll also need three oranges and one lemon, all untreated. Use a peeler or zester to remove the peel from the fruits. Squeeze the juice from two of the oranges and the lemon, and collect it. Slice the third orange into rounds.
Now add the peels, orange slices, juice, and remaining ingredients to the wine. Heat the drink, but do not let it boil. Place the Feuerzange (fire tongs) on the rim of the pot, then set the sugar loaf on top. For ten cups of punch, it should weigh about 250 grams.
To soak the sugar loaf, use 300 milliliters of rum. First, warm it slightly by mixing it with a little hot water. Then pour it over the sugar loaf using a ladle until it’s completely soaked. Light the sugar on fire. When the flame begins to die down, pour more rum over it until all the sugar has melted.
Once this is done, stir the punch and pour it into cups. Serve it while the drink is still hot.
Alternative preparation ideas
Depending on your taste, you can enhance the wine with additional ingredients. For example, you might add liqueurs such as cherry, orange, or almond liqueur for a stronger punch. Some variations also include black tea.
If you’re feeling a bit experimental, you can use white wine to prepare a white Feuerzangenbowle. In this case, use white rum to soak the sugar loaf. Adding sherry to the wine is also recommended.
What should you keep in mind when preparing a Feuerzangenbowle?
When preparing a Feuerzangenbowle, always remember that you’re dealing with an open flame. Make sure the ceiling is high enough, and keep any easily flammable objects away from the pot.
Use only rum with an alcohol content of 45% to 54%. Never use rum with 80% alcohol, as the flame will become too high. Use a stainless steel ladle — not one made of wood or plastic — to pour the rum. And never pour rum directly from the bottle onto the sugar loaf.
Just in case, have the pot lid ready. If the flame gets too high, you can extinguish it by covering it with the lid.
Nevertheless, there’s no need to be afraid of trying Feuerzangenbowle. As long as you follow these safety tips, you’ll be perfectly fine.
